TP-Link’s Deco XE75 AXE5400 is a solid WiFi 6E router system that offers a good balance between performance and affordability. While it may not have the most eye-catching design, its mesh capabilities make it a contender worth considering.
Hardware
The Deco XE75 consists of three plain cylindrical units that may not win any design awards but blend into most environments easily. Each unit features three gigabit Ethernet ports, with one serving as the primary connection to your modem. These ports also support Ethernet backhaul if needed. The inclusion of three ports per node is generous, considering the trend towards wired connections in 2023.
One of the key choices is configuring the 6GHz band, which is reserved for backhaul by default. This setup makes sense, given the limited number of devices compatible with the 6GHz band. TP-Link’s “AI-driven mesh” claims to optimize device connections for better speed and reliability over time.
Installation
Setting up the Deco XE75 is straightforward and quick, taking around 16 minutes. After downloading the Deco companion app and creating a TP-Link account, the app guides you through the setup process. Plug in the first node, configure network settings, and the system handles the rest, connecting additional nodes seamlessly.
However, the power cables for the UK models are relatively short, which can be inconvenient for placing nodes in optimal locations, especially if your room layout is challenging.
Performance
After setup, it takes some time for the connection to stabilize, but once it does, it remains stable. Speeds near the primary node reach around 270 Mbps down, even two floors away, while maintaining speeds of 260 Mbps. Even in areas with signal dead spots, download speeds hover around 220 Mbps. The connection’s consistency is noteworthy.
App and Controls
The Deco app provides an easy-to-use interface, ideal for novice users. It displays the network’s topology and connected devices, making it simple to manage your network. However, the level of control in submenus is somewhat limited. Renaming devices may be necessary since TP-Link’s identification of connected equipment can be vague.
The app offers essential features, including parental controls, network optimization, IPv6 setup, and device prioritization. Push notifications for new device connections enhance network security.
Additional Features
Deco offers smart home integrations with TP-Link and Philips Hue devices. The free Basic tier of Homeshield provides security threat scans and robust parental controls. Content filtering options are available but may block useful information.
A paid version of Homeshield offers additional protection against hacks and more detailed website usage data but may not justify the cost for many users.
